Depth and Height Psychology

Depth psychology involves deep exploration.

“The mind is like an iceberg; it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.”
– Sigmund Freud

Getting deep beneath the surface is where all the roots lie. Often, much of what goes on in our lives seems senseless and is unexplainable by our current conscious mind. However, most of what goes on in their lives lies beneath the surface and is outside of our awareness; that is what is referred to as the unconscious mind.

Hence, depth psychology is about discovering what lies beneath the surface of your conscious mind. By peeling away at those layers, we can find the “what” of your life and make connections between the past and the present, i.e., where you have come from and what is the root of it all.

By making the unconscious mind conscious, we can live more holistically and mindfully, and heal from past wounds that have been buried for many years.

Austrian psychiatrist Viktor Frankl developed a form of therapy called Logotherapy, which is loosely translated as the therapy of meaning. Much of his theory is based on his experience as a prisoner in the concentration camps and how his resilience in finding meaning in the most difficult of situations led to survival and ultimately triumph.

Often quoting the saying by philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how,” he helped link the “why” of life, which represents the meaning and purpose we find even in our struggles.

Understanding the why helps us endure the impossible and even thrive by saying “yes” to life despite all our difficulties. Frankl called this form of therapy “height psychology” because it is all about bringing out our Strengths and Greatness.

No matter how difficult things seem or actually are, we can always rise above the fray.

Find the “what” and “why” in your life.

I offer an approach that combines depth and height psychology.

While depth psychology tends to focus more on the person’s negative experiences, height psychology helps you find the good within you, no matter how things feel or seem.

Your life always has meaning, regardless of the circumstances. To me, the fusion of these two approaches, while seemingly paradoxical, truly complements each other.

You need to understand what is wrong before you can truly appreciate what is right. Together, we will explore the “what” of your life and then learn to find meaning in the struggles and bring out your greatness.

Once you get to the root and find meaning in life’s endeavors, we will put it all into practice as you talk the talk and then walk the walk.

You do not need to understand yourself thoroughly to know what to do. Yet getting beneath the surface helps you uncover what has been getting in your way.

Then, finding meaning enables you to gain a more balanced perspective on what you can do versus what you can’t, and that is the perfect segue to taking action that will change your life for the better, leading you to become the best version of yourself.
